Breast Procedures
A woman’s choice for breast augmentation is a very personal one, but also involves several important decisions. Breast augmentation is generally a safe, rewarding procedure when done by a well trained surgeon like Dr. Miranda who is experienced in the procedure. Dr. Miranda strongly believes that breast augmentation can improve a woman’s appearance and self-confidence with a natural look. Like with any medical decision, it is important to understand the process of breast augmentation. Each personal consultation will include a discussion of each of the following important topics:
More information on Breast Augmentation and Dr. Miranda can be found here. Breast-Lift (Mastopexy) As women age or as a consequence of pregnancy, breast-feeding or weight loss, the breasts often appear to lose volume and sag below their natural position. Dr. Miranda is experienced in mastopexy or breast-lift surgery that restores the breasts to a more natural shape and position on the chest. Breast-lift surgery can be accomplished through a variety of approaches depending on the size and shape of each woman’s breasts. In certain cases, it can be done with very minimal, generally well concealed incisions or combined with breast augmentation. Breast-Lift is part of the popular “Mommy-Makeover” which helps women regain their pre-pregnancy bodies, and Dr. Miranda often recommends combining breast lifting with liposuction or a tummy-tuck (abdominoplasty). Breast Reduction Large or pendulous breasts are a particular problem for many women. Large breasts can cause numerous problems including back pain, neck pain, and breast pain. Furthermore, large breasts can cause women to have difficulty fitting into clothes as well as have the appearance of being much heavier than she actually is. Due to their large size, the breasts often fall lower on the body than their natural position. Dr. Miranda is skilled in breast reduction surgery and can restore the shape and confidence of the patient while relieving many of her painful symptoms. Male Breast Reduction (Gynecomastia) A significant fraction of men actually develop a noticeable amount of breast tissue either towards the end of adolescence or in middle age. This is called gynecomastia. There are numerous causes for this problem some of which can be serious. Fortunately, in most cases there is not a serious problem underlying the growth of the breast tissue. Dr. Miranda has a full complement of techniques to treat male breast enlargement (gynecomastia). Dr. Miranda will discuss the options with the patient (and in the case of adolescents with their parents/guardians as well). These options include conventional and ultrasonic liposuction (UAL, e.g. Vaser), simple excision (with the scar generally well hidden within the nipple) or a combination of excision and liposuction. Generally, Dr. Miranda recommends a technique based upon the size and shape of them man’s chest and the patient’s preferences. Dr. Miranda is an expert on the treatment of gynecomastia in both adults and children. He has written the definitive chapter on gynecomastia in the most important Plastic Surgery textbook that is used to train plastic surgeons world-wide. Dr. Miranda has also authored the chapter on breast deformities in children and adolescents (both boys and girls) in the textbook (“Pediatric Surgery”) used to train pediatric surgeons across the globe. Correction of Nipple Problems: Inverted Nipples & Nipple Reduction Dr. Miranda believes that the nipple and its surrounding skin (areola) are the aesthetic focus of the breast. Consequently abnormalities of the nipple can disturb the overall appearance of an otherwise normal breast. Common problems include the inverted nipple (where the nipple itself is pulled into the breast itself) or overly large nipples. Dr. Miranda can fortunately correct each of these problems with relatively minor procedures while minimizing the chances of sensation change or problems with breast feeding in the future. Edward P.
