Jaw Reduction and Contouring Contouring the lower face can provide many individuals a more graceful facial appearance. Options include:
The Jaws and Facial Beauty The jaws define the contour and aesthetic of the lower face. Several components of the jaws contribute to the overall appearance of the lower face. These include:
When looking directly at an individual (as in the mirror or in a portrait), the width of the lower face is defined primarily by the size of the mandible (lower jaw bone) itself and the bulk of the overlying muscle (masseter). A large mandible or a bulky masseter muscle can give the appearance of a square face and in women a more masculine appearance. This is particularly true in many Asian women as the overall beauty of the face favors a gentler curve of the lower jaw and a narrower lower face. When in profile, a large mandible can give a very square angle to the lower jaw and the masseter muscle can contribute to an overall boxy appearance. However, the chin makes a major contribution to the appearance of the lower face. A small chin can unbalance the aesthetics of the face by accentuating the teeth and can make even a normal sized nose look too big. Asymmetry of the chin can cause the entire face to appear altered.
